Blackmoor Golf Club is a vintage Gary Player Design. It is the only golf course in the Myrtle Beach area designed by a world-renowned golf course architect and the winner of the career Grand Slam. Blackmoor is a fun course because it offers golfers of all ages and abilities a friendly but true test of their game. It provides many risk-reward opportunities. It also gives you the option to play shots that you don’t normally play on most modern designs such as the bump and run.
To play this course well, it's important to understand the amount of risk that is out there on each hole, especially before you get too aggressive. This course is designed for golfers to hit every club in their bag. Many golfers use their drivers too often or their long irons in places where they could lay back and have a better chance for a low score, especially because the well-maintained greens at Blackmoor aren’t too undulating, and golfers can make putts from almost anywhere on the green.
The best way to approach this course is to take what it gives you. Blackmoor is narrow in some areas and out of bounds, water hazards and trees can come into play. The best approach to scoring on this course is keeping your tee shots in between the tree lines and playing to the elbow of each dogleg. Obviously, this is easier said than done. However, if you consistently are in between the tree lines off the tee, then the golf course sets up very well for you. So lay back off the driver. Play for accuracy and you will have a distinct advantage over everyone else in your group. Remember, as the old adage goes “the woods are full of big hitters!”
