In 1967 the Greater Naples Golf Association initiated a plan to build a public golf course in Collier County. Each member of the Association contributed $1000 to the fund and an additional $250,000 was borrowed from the Small Business Administration to help finance the project. Tony Privisano, a nationally known boxer and Don Wynn of Wynn's Food Market in Naples were two of the original shareholders.
Cornelius VanderLely, a native of Holland, purchased over 25,000 acres of land in 1972 throughout Southeast Collier County. The land was bordered by Rattlesnake Hammock Road, Tamiami Trail and County Road 951/Collier Blvd. VanderLely then formed Lely Estates Inc, and began to develop a second golf course named Lely Royal Palm Country Club later named Royal Palm Country Club of Naples, Inc.
The first 9 holes were finished in 1974. Those 9 holes today are numbers 10 through 18. In 1974 and 1975 the second 9 holes were finished. The championship 18-hole golf course officially opened on December 31, 1975.
Membership origination in the club today is global, reaching throughout the United States, Canada, Scotland, England, Germany and Ireland. At Royal Palm Country Club new members are warmly welcomed and immediately experience a friendly and fun golfing and social environment.
